As far as the history books are concerned, in 1781 a caravan arrived at a small peninsula on Northern California soil; it totaled thirty families of no less than four people each, plus one man: the very wealthy and very generous caravan owner, one Mr. Amory Eldritch. It took a year before the thirty families and one man were settled; it took a lot of building, a lot of hard work, but the fishing was good, the hunting was excellent, and of all the caravans that made it to the West, this one proved to be one of the hardiest and best cared for bunch. In the year 1782, in honor of the man that had brought them to their new home and had given them the new start that they had all been hoping for, all of the settlers decided on a name for the town: they called it Eldritch.

Eldritch surfaced like any other town that would one day become a city. Amory Eldritch, town founder and philanthropist fell in love with a native woman of the Wiyot people, with whom the settlers had tentatively come to an agreement with as to territory; and they started a family. It grew from there; ever expanding down the peninsula, with its fair share of tall tales, barroom brawls, and duels at dawn. It continued on even after Amory and his wife, Lira, died. Almost a century passed until a great mistake flooded the town with blood. The Wiyot people, who performed their annual Year Renewal Celebration in their cultural centre on Indian Island were massacred by a group of white men. Nearly every woman, man, and child was killed. In spite of this tragedy, the people of Eldritch continued to grow, some celebrating the massacre; others mourning it, knowing that the man that had made the town possible had loved a woman of those people that had died.

In 1929, an earthquake shook the peninsula, and the land that connected the center of Eldritch City to the settlement on the mainland crumbled under the tectonic shock, isolating the original center of the town from what it had become. In spite of this second, more natural tragedy, the people of Eldritch pushed forth. They began construction immediately, bringing from whence they could the necessary things that would enable them not only to somehow reconnect their city center -- now dubbed The Nexus -- to the rest of the town, but also to expand further beyond what even Amory Eldritch himself, visionary and idealist that he was, had dreamed possible.

Today, the city of Eldritch, California is one of the largest of the state, almost rivaling the sheer size of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Unique to this city, however, is the startling difference in architecture between The Nexus and the mainland neighborhoods; where the mainland is easily commonplace, The Nexus is a circular hive of financial activity, with towering spires and buildings that scrape the sky. Indian Island has been sealed off from the world, fully converted into a natural habitat for any flora and fauna that may find a home there.

That's what the history books say. But what do they know?
