Restrictions
There are some character concepts that we are not comfortable permitting in the game. There are also some concepts that are very overused and that there may be an overabundance of at the time on the game.
Not Permitted
- Minors: The minimum character age on Eldritch is 16. This means there are no PC Minors on the game. We also ask that players do not present concepts or RP their character as someone who gets romantically or physically involved with characters (including NPCs and background characters) who are underage. That's just someplace we don't want to go.
- Rape: Just don't go there. There's a million arguments why this should or should not be allowed, and we're aware it was addressed in the TV series, but that was something watched passively, not actively participated in like in the collaborative writing that is RP. No one here is capable of knowing ahead of time if one of our players may have such a thing trigger something unpleasant. As we want the game to be comfortable for all, this is something we don't permit.
Overused
- None at this time.
Character Types
Characters on Eldritch are divided into two categories: Original Characters (player created concepts apped at two levels: Beta and Alpha), and Appable NPCs (staff created concepts which players can apply to play, which are built at variable levels). Original characters of both levels have more resources to apply during chargen than the average person in the world of Eldritch. There is a significant difference between Alphas and Betas, but that gap is about as large between the average, non-player extra and a Beta. Appable NPCs are staff-made characters who fulfill some need in the game, and become available for players to apply to play. They have premade (either wholly or partially) character sheets and histories which muse be adhered to by the player who takes them on.
Original Characters
In general, it can be said that Betas are the better, brighter, and more experienced of the "average" folk; while Alphas are people who have gone through something or had an experience that has given them a purpose. This doesn't have to be the case: a Betas can be clearly inhuman or a supernatural warrior, though Alphas should always have had a past experience that has formed them in some way or another. Below, we detail Alpha and Beta characters, and explain what each is meant for in broad terms.

| Trait | Alpha | Beta |

Alpha
Alpha characters are the more experienced characters in the world of Eldritch. These are the characters who have seen and done more than the average joe on the street, or who have lived long enough to have accumulated more wisdom and life experience. Theys start off with more Attribute, Skill, and Quality points than a Beta character. However, they also start off with fewer Drama points; consider them spent in the moments which have helped them survive to this point.
An Alpha character is not meant to be the 'brand new' soldier, the 'newly turned' vampire or the 'just passed the bar' lawyer. They shouldn't be a 'normal' high school student or a 'standard human' just entering college. These characters are about more than having more points for your +sheet, they're about having a fuller, richer background with broader experiences that have made them better than the general populace at the things they do.
Beta
Beta Characters are talented, but not necessarily experienced beings who are a step above the general populace at large, but have a long way to go before they become the cream of the crop. These have fewer Attribute, Skill, and Quality points than an Alpha character, but, because they are less experienced and more vulnerable, they have more Drama points to help them survive.
These are the normal but talented humans who are a touch better than joe blow when it comes to their specific fields. These are the newly made monsters (such as freshly turned vamps and newly bitten werewolves), the young (for their species) critters, and the characters who just finished their studies or training and are starting on their own. These are also the younger students with good potential and special abilities who just haven't been around long enough to accumulate lots of life experience.
Appable NPCs
Appable NPCs are staff-created characters which have become open for players to apply to play as a PC. The base information for them, and any RP they have been involved in prior must be adhered to. There is some flexibility in re-casting them, and they will have a pre-existing partial character sheet. Approved players will complete the character sheet, flesh out their backgrounds, and submit it for application. If a player drops a former NPC, the NPC will go back up for reapplication with the now-complete sheet and background. This in effect becomes a "roster" or "premade" character. You can find a list of appable NPCs on the NPCs page. They are marked with a + sign.

Modifications
Let's face it. Sometimes that character that sounded great on paper, turns out to be a total mess when you finally try to play them. And those who are unfamiliar with the game system often don't really have a good grasp on how things on your sheet work when they are in character generation for the first time. Because of this, Eldritch MUSH has a grace period in which you can use +request modify <character name>=<reasons> to ask permission to re-enter character generation and make minor modifications to a new character. Please supply the reasons for the modification request.
For a first character (meaning the player has not made a character on the game before), there is a grace period of 3 weeks in which they may request to modify their character. This gives them a good chance at participating in a plot of some type in that time period so they can test the viability of their character, and plenty of time to get settled on the grid and feel out their character personality.
For a new character by an existing player (meaning the player has made a character on the game prior), there is a grace period of 10 days in which they may request to modify their character. An experienced player should already have an idea of how their +sheet works, but this gives them time to figure out if their character concept is viable on the grid.
